What kind of work did you undertake during your placement?

Every day I was challenged to do something out of my comfort zone, by being given high-quality work in areas I was unfamiliar with. It was a very realistic insight into what life as a trainee solicitor would be like at Irwin Mitchell and I was given plenty of responsibility from day one, which made me feel like a valued part of the team.

For example, whilst in the Employment team, I was given the opportunity to research an area of law for a particular matter, drafted the skeleton argument and also attended the employment tribunal, in which our client was successful, partly on the back of my preparation.

“I found that every aspect of the scheme exceeded my expectations and the firm truly lived up to its core values.”

What advice would you give to future candidates to make the most out of a Legal Work Placement?

Ask as many questions as you can about the firm and take an interest in the people there. I found that partners and employees want to get to know you because they enjoy talking about common interests with those who could potentially be future colleagues.

What is the social side of Irwin Mitchell like?

The trainees did a fantastic job organising the social side of the placement. From informal after-work drinks, to a meal out in the city centre and these activities offered the Legal Work Placement students the opportunity to chat with the trainee solicitors in a relaxed, informal environment. It became apparent that there are some good opportunities to socialise through various events including sporting activities, which only reinforced the collegiate appeal of the firm for me.

What has surprised you most about Irwin Mitchell?

How invested everyone is in your future from an early stage and enthusiastic about ensuring you get the most out of your time with the firm.
