As a career changer, tell us about your journey to becoming a trainee solicitor.

My journey to becoming a trainee solicitor started in 2006 when I left the NHS. I was a registered general adult nurse and had spent 10 years of my career working in critical care. I embarked on my career at Irwin Mitchell as a medical researcher in April 2006.

Initially, a large part of my role involved assessing new cases from a medical perspective and helping the Medical Negligence team. My role developed and I became more involved with the legal as well as the medical aspects of cases. I wanted to develop my career at Irwin Mitchell to become a solicitor, so I applied for a training contract and successfully secured a place.

“It’s never too late to change your career and Irwin Mitchell is a very supportive firm in developing individuals.”

What was it like to be a trainee solicitor in the Newcastle office?

It’s brilliant. Employees come from a variety of backgrounds including nursing, midwifery and the police. It’s great to listen and learn from colleagues with different skill sets. The partners are very encouraging of trainees.

What advice would you give to people who are considering a career change into law?

It’s never too late to change your career and Irwin Mitchell is a very supportive firm in developing individuals. It’s invaluable to get experience before changing career and I’d advise anyone to apply for a work experience placement so they get a good idea of what the role entails.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy the client contact and the challenges that clients can bring. Clients often have a host of issues when they meet their solicitor and it’s so rewarding to help them back on the road to recovery. All the employees at Irwin Mitchell are approachable and will do everything they can to get their client the best possible outcome. We’re pioneering in the way we work and rehabilitation is a large part of our ethos.

Having completed my training contact with Irwin Mitchell I am delighted to have the opportunity to work as a qualified solicitor in the Medical Negligence Team. I look forward to the challenges and rewards that it will bring.
